Chatting Beauty in Bali with Pangea Dreams founder, Tracy Komlos
I just returned from my third mind-blowing week-long female entrepreneur’s retreat in Palm Springs with Pangea Dreams! I learned that the Pangea Dreams team will be in Bali the same time that I’m there in May - and I know that founder Tracy Komlos has led several successful (aka, SOLD OUT!) retreats there, so what better time and person to chat Beauty in Bali with? We sat down together in Palm Springs at the rainbow-hued Saguaro Hotel and Spa to chat all things Bali, Beauty, and what’s next for Pangea Dreams!

Julie Off Duty: First tell us a little bit about yourself and how Pangea Dreams came to be.
Tracy Komlos: "When I was just starting out as a digital creator and solo-entrepreneur, I often found myself lonely, and at a loss when looking for other like-minded women to co-create with. I was craving a sense of community and support, but I simply couldn't find it. Turns out, I wasn't alone. In 2016 I decided to solve this problem and host a retreat for female creators and entrepreneurs just like me to come together to learn new skills, collaborate, and connect. We very quickly proved our concept - in less than two weeks, we sold out of three back to back retreats that took place in Bali. Now, after 3 years running, Pangea Dreams is the #1 industry leader in women's educational retreats. We are dedicated to building a global community of female change-makers, thought leaders and creatives. Through our intensive week-long educational retreats, we empower women with the necessary tools & skills to succeed in the digital world.”
JOD: So I will be in Bali this May at the same time as the Pangea Dreams Signature retreat! Tell us how may times you’ve been to Bali, both trips and total weeks/ months.
TK: That's amazing Julie!!! You are absolutely going to love it! Bali is such a special island and a place that holds many fond memories for me. Although I won’t be in Bali for this retreat, the PD team will be running most of the 2020 retreats on their own now, which is a huge accomplishment for us! You definitely need to stop by and say hi to all the amazing women who will be on the retreat!!
Now to answer your question, I have spent a significant amount of time in Bali over the last 4 years. I believe I have spent about 1 year in Bali in total and hosted 9 retreats there. The best part is, it never gets old. Its a place that I never tire of and look forward to returning every time. There is an energy there, a feeling that when you land, you’re at home, a calmness. I always leave Bali feeling more energized and inspired than when I arrived.
Must-have beauty products for a trip to Bali:
Face Oil Serum by Four Sigmatic
(Editor’s note: Four Sigmatic is actually a brand that Tracy intro’d me to and I use this too! It’s available online, at Whole Foods, Sprouts, Lucky’s, and in NYC and LA) “Beautify from the outside in with a serum you can eat. This serum is made with real (super)food ingredients and is so pure you can eat it (and I do). Apply after AM and PM cleansing underneath your moisturizer to glow.” Vegan, Cruelty-Free, and of course, edible!
This multi-action hydrating mist delivers nutrient-dense, herb-infused aloe water and fatty acids to effectively penetrate the epidermis to enhance the delivery of hydration, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. Sounds good to me!
Olaplex #6 Editor’s note: I use this one too!
A leave-in reparative styling cream that eliminates frizz, hydrates, and protects all hair types. Free of sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, phthalates, and oil. It’s also vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free and recyclable.
Biossance Squalene + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil
“The lightweight oil lifts away makeup and impurities, then rinses completely clean with water. Formulated with our sugarcane-derived, sustainable squalane oil, it helps keep skin hydrated and feeling fresh.”
JOD: What do you do on long flights to pass the time?
TK: I love listening to podcasts and/or audiobooks, so before any long flight, I make sure to download at least 6 episodes of my fav podcasts so that I can listen and learn throughout the flight!
If the flight is predominantly during the day and I have energy then I love getting work done! Whether it's writing out my to-do list, drafting emails or editing photos. (Speaking of which, I am currently writing this on my flight from New York to Montreal)
If the flight is an overnight flight, then I will try and sleep. I never travel without my eye mask and earplugs!
JOD: What are your secrets to sleeping on long flights? Do you have any must-have sleeping accessories?
TK: For long overnight flights, comfort is always my first priority! I make sure to wear a big sweater with a hood, leggings or sweats and a big scarf. I also never travel without my silk eye mask and earplugs.
When its time to try and get some sleep, I put on my hood, eye mask, earplugs and use my scarf as a blanket or pillow. I don't take melatonin but I do love my mushrooms, so I always travel with my Four Sigmatic mushroom elixirs, for overnight flights I take the Reishi Elixir or the Reishi Cacao.
Also, a travel tip- before I get on the flight, I usually ask the flight counter at my gate if it is a full flight.
If the flight isn’t full, I ask if there are any empty rows. This way when it's time to board, I go directly to the empty row and sit in the middle seat!! That way I will be able to lie down and actually sleep for the duration of the flight.
If you aren’t able to ask or they can't give you an answer for some reason, before the flight takes off, once the doors are shut and no more passengers are boarding the flight, you’ll find me scoping out the seating situation. If I spot an empty row or better seat, I will likely move there!
JOD: The Pangea alumni is currently over 250, if you could gather every single person together for a week, where would you take us and why?
TK: Ahhhh this is such a fun question!!!! My dream trip with the whole Pangea fam would be to a private island somewhere in the Maldives or the Mediterranean where we can all roam free, explore and relax without any outside distractions!!! This magical island would be fully equipped with multiple 30 person villas that are fully staffed and a main area where we could all dine together and enjoy the most delicious fresh and organic food!!! We would have sunrise workouts and sunset bonfires, lots of laughs and incredible moments shared together!
Just writing this is getting me all excited hahahah - I need to start researching and planning this ASAP!!!
JOD: Whats next for Panega Dreams im 2020 and beyond?
TK: So many exciting projects in the works, but the one I am most excited for at the moment is our scholarship initiative. This is a secret, so sharing this on your blog will be the first time we are publicly talking about it heheh - We will be launching a crowding funding campaign to raise over $16,000 for our amazing scholarship program!!!! We will be awarding 16 women a $1000 scholarship grant towards any of our 2020 retreats!! The campaign will go live February 14, 2020. So keep an eye out for that 🙂
